In 1405, Zhu Di, Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty, commissioned Zheng He to embark on diplomatic missions to the various states across the Western Seas. From then on, Zheng He launched his maritime navigation endeavors that spanned 28 years. He traveled to more than 30 countries and regions in Asia and Africa, reaching as far as the eastern coast of Africa.

At the 2025 Zheng He International Forum held in Malacca, Malaysia, in late 2025, Chinese and foreign experts jointly confirmed through research and argumentation that Zheng He visited Malacca on all seven of his voyages to the Western Oceans.
This conclusion has corrected a century-long misunderstanding and marks a milestone breakthrough in Zheng He studies.
